There are two types of batteries that are used for emergency lights; they're:

Sealed lead-acid batteries (the Exact Same type used in automobiles) and Nickel-cadmium batteries.

Sealed lead-acid batteries would be the oldest rechargeable technology accessible. They're called lead-acid because they contain lead metal plates, immersed in acid. Since then, other technologies have been developed, but they are generally more expensive. In a nickel-cadmium battery, the 2 metals are separated by a dielectric (non-conductive) layer, causing the metals to magnetically react with one another, producing the electrons that form electricity.
