What are emergency lights?
Emergency lights are fixtures that illuminate critical safety areas and exit paths in the event of a building power outage. In order to do this, they require backup power. The vast majority of emergency lighting fixtures use built-in battery backup, but standard lighting fixtures can also serve this purpose when paired with an emergency generator or inverter system.
FAQ
How often should I test my emergency lighting system?
You are required by law to test your egress and emergency lighting on a regular basis. According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, equipment should be tested for 30 seconds per month and 90 minutes per year. In addition to ensuring proper equipment operation, these tests help maintain batteries. Visit our Maintenance Guide for more information on how to test and maintain your emergency exit signs.
How do I test my exit lights?
For non-self-testing devices, look for a small "push to test" button that cuts power to the device and puts it into emergency mode. For your desired monthly test, press and hold the button for thirty seconds to test the bulb and battery. If the light or logo comes on when you press and hold the test button and stays on consistently for the full thirty seconds, your unit has passed the test. If the light dims or does not come on, you will need to contact an electrician for troubleshooting.
Do I need emergency lighting?
All exits and evacuation routes are required by law to be equipped with adequate and reliable lighting. oSHA, NFPA, and other agencies have developed a number of codes that govern the installation, inspection, and testing of exit evacuation lights. In addition, some individual jurisdictions have their own unique codes. Consult your city's fire marshal or inspector to confirm the proper configuration and requirements for exit lighting.
How long can emergency lights stay on?
According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, when power is interrupted and the emergency mode is activated, lights must be illuminated for at least 90 minutes at an average of at least 1 footcandle.
What is the difference between a damp and a wet location?
A wet location is an exterior or interior location that is normally or regularly exposed to moisture or moisture condensation near electrical equipment. A wet location is an area where water or other liquids may drip, splash, or otherwise come into direct contact with electrical equipment.
Can I connect the Exit Light to a cord and plug so I can plug it into a wall outlet?
No. Any modification to any exit or emergency light sold by The Exit Light Co., Inc. by anyone other than The Exit Light Co., Inc. will void the warranty on that product. The code allows for the addition of cords, but limits them to no more than 36 inches in length. We can add cords to many products, just ask.
