industrial & commercial emergency lights and batteries
Emergency lights are required in factories, warehouses or other industrial commercial buildings. Emergency lights are essential for any building, especially those with high foot traffic. Exit Sign Warehouse works to ensure that your commercial building has the latest emergency lighting options.
Hotels, restaurants, churches and schools all need exit lighting and emergency lights that are reliable and meet safety standards and regulations.
Older buildings with low foot traffic should also have emergency lighting so that people can easily evacuate damaged or unsafe buildings.
What are emergency lights?
Emergency lighting is battery-operated lights that activate when a building loses power. All new buildings are required to have emergency lighting to meet the standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In order to do this, they require backup power. The vast majority of emergency lighting fixtures use built-in battery backup, but standard lighting fixtures can also serve this purpose when paired with an emergency generator or inverter system.

Batteries for emergency lighting
Emergency lighting requires the use of lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride and lithium batteries. These particular lead-acid batteries are rechargeable and more economical than other modern rechargeable batteries.
The lead-acid battery used to power emergency lighting is called a VLRA or Valve-Lead-Regulated-Acid battery. It is a maintenance-free battery that is integrated into an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system.
Wet-cell nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries (NiCad) can also be used for emergency lighting. They require no maintenance and use a special low-voltage release valve. Another significant benefit is the greater energy density produced.
FAQ
How often should I test my emergency lighting system?
You are required by law to test your egress and emergency lighting on a regular basis. According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, equipment should be tested for 30 seconds per month and 90 minutes per year. In addition to ensuring proper equipment operation, these tests help maintain batteries. Visit our Maintenance Guide for more information on how to test and maintain your emergency exit signs.
How do I test my exit lights?
For non-self-testing devices, look for a small "push to test" button that cuts power to the device and puts it into emergency mode. For your desired monthly test, press and hold the button for thirty seconds to test the bulb and battery. If the light or logo comes on when you press and hold the test button and stays on consistently for the full thirty seconds, your unit has passed the test. If the light dims or does not come on, you will need to contact an electrician for troubleshooting.
Do I need emergency lighting?
All exits and evacuation routes are required by law to be equipped with adequate and reliable lighting. oSHA, NFPA, and other agencies have developed a number of codes that govern the installation, inspection, and testing of exit evacuation lights. In addition, some individual jurisdictions have their own unique codes. Consult your city's fire marshal or inspector to confirm the proper configuration and requirements for exit lighting.
How long can emergency lights stay on?
According to NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, when power is interrupted and the emergency mode is activated, lights must be illuminated for at least 90 minutes at an average of at least 1 footcandle.
What is the difference between a damp and a wet location?
A wet location is an exterior or interior location that is normally or regularly exposed to moisture or moisture condensation near electrical equipment. A wet location is an area where water or other liquids may drip, splash, or otherwise come into direct contact with electrical equipment.
Can I connect the Exit Light to a cord and plug so I can plug it into a wall outlet?
No. Any modification to any exit or emergency light sold by The Exit Light Co., Inc. by anyone other than The Exit Light Co., Inc. will void the warranty on that product. The code allows for the addition of cords, but limits them to no more than 36 inches in length. We can add cords to many products, just ask.
